In Gambia, the non-metallic mineral sector is closely tied to agricultural enhancement and basic infrastructure. The demand for clay bentonite has grown as the construction sector seeks more stable sealing materials for water reservoirs and landfill liners to protect the local groundwater from contamination.
Water purification remains a critical challenge in the region, leading to an increased reliance on activated carbon for removing organic pollutants from coastal and riverine water sources. The tropical climate and high humidity levels in Gambia necessitate minerals that can withstand rapid weathering and maintain chemical stability.
Furthermore, the artisanal scale of mineral processing in the region often lacks high-purity additives. The introduction of bentonite powder and other catalysts is beginning to transition the local industry from raw extraction to value-added processing, aligning with national economic diversification goals.
